Notebook used first for notes in shorthand, presumably the shorthand invented by De Fontaine. Only one note contains the date 1868, some others are dated month and day. One section bears the heading, "Before Judge Carpenter, Friday, March 19, Pilsbury v. City of Charleston." The items mounted to the leaves over the shorthand notes concern the publishing and advertising of De Fontaine's shorthand manual, Condensed long hand and rapid writer's companion (New York, 1886); as well as Ulysses S. Grant; Stonewall Jackson; and Civil War memorials for Grant, Jackson, and others.
